Revealed: Leaked drafts show that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) will censor the Internet and stifle free expression worldwide. Negotiators are closer than ever to reaching an agreement2, so we’re firing back with a powerful video to expose their censorship plan. We need your help to make it go viral

New leaked drafts of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) reveal that negotiators are pushing full steam ahead with their Internet censorship plan. The leaks confirm our worst fears about the TPP: it will make the Internet more censored, expensive, and policed.1

The leaks also reveal that, despite pushback from citizens around the world, negotiators are closer than ever to reaching an agreement.2

This could be our last chance to tell negotiators to abandon their plans to censor the Internet. We’re launching a compelling video that will expose the TPP’s threats to free expression online — can you chip in to help make sure it goes viral?

Thanks to support from our community, we’ve managed to prevent TPP negotiators from nailing down their plan so far.

But negotiations are wrapping up and our campaign to stop the TPP’s extreme censorship is shifting its focus to political leaders who cannot hide behind the closed doors of secret meetings. Our task is clear: we must show them how unpopular Internet censorship really is.

We have to act quickly — negotiators have just concluded a week of secret meetings in Australia,3 and President Obama has signalled he wants to announce finalized details of the agreement within weeks.4

That’s why we need our free expression video to spread like wildfire — once the public understands what’s at risk in the TPP, they’ll never accept it.

We know this is a strategy that works — if the video goes viral, decision makers will take notice.

OpenMedia has led the fight to stop the TPP’s extreme censorship — we engaged over 300,000 people in 155 countries around the world as part of creating a positive alternative to the TPP, the Our Digital Future report.5 Our video promotes our positive plan to enable everyone to share and collaborate freely online– your support today will empower us to show decision-makers the sensible alternative to the TPP’s illegitimate censorship.

So far, the TPP’s negotiations have been shrouded in extreme secrecy — but with your support our video can drag them out into the light, placing pressure on political leaders responsible for implementing the agreement’s censorship.

For Free Expression,

Meghan & Jason, on behalf of your OpenMedia team.

ISIS crisis please pray!!!

Prayer Request from Dan and Marilyn Wilson.   Missionaries who are in the areas that are being attacked by ISIS are asking to  be showered in prayer. ISIS has taken over the town they are in today. He said  ISIS is systematically going house to house to all the Christians and asking the  children to denounce Jesus. He said so far not one child has. And so far all  have consequently been killed. But not the parents. The UN has withdrawn and the  missionaries are on their own. They are determined to stick it out for the sake  of the families – even if it means their own deaths. They are very afraid, have  no idea how to even begin ministering to these families who have had seen their  children martyred. Yet he says he knows God has called them for some reason to  be His voice and hands at this place at this time. Even so, they are begging for  prayers for courage to live out their vocation in such dire circumstances. And  like the children, accept martyrdom if they are called to do so. These brave  parents instilled such a fervent faith in their children that they chose  martyrdom. Please surround them in their loss with your prayers for hope and  perseverance.
One missionary was able to talk to her brother briefly by  phone. She didn't say it, but I believe she believes it will be their last  conversation. Pray for her too. She said he just kept asking her to help him  know what to do and do it. She told him to tell the families we ARE praying for  them and they are not alone or forgotten — no matter what. Please keep them all  in your prayers.
This came this morning…
Just a few minutes ago I  received the following text message on my phone from Sean Malone who leads  Crisis Relief International (CRI). We then spoke briefly on the phone and I  assured him that we would share this urgent prayer need with all of our  contacts.
“We lost the city of Queragosh (Qaraqosh). It fell to ISIS and they  are beheading children systematically. This is the city we have been smuggling  food to. ISIS has pushed back Peshmerga (Kurdish forces) and is within 10  minutes of where our CRI team is working. Thousands more fled into the city of  Erbil last night. The UN evacuated its staff in Erbil. Our team is unmoved and  will stay. Prayer cover needed!” Please pray sincerely for the deliverance of  the people of Northern Iraq from the terrible advancement of ISIS and its  extreme Islamic goals for mass conversion or death for Christians across this  region. May I plead with you not to ignore this email. Do not forward it before  you have prayed through it. Then send it to as many people as possible. Send it  to friends and Christians you may know. Send it to your prayer group. Send it to  your pastor and phone him to pray on Sunday during the service – making a  special time of prayer for this. We need to stand in the gap for our fellow  Christians.
Thank you for all your prayers !!!!

Choice is a beautiful thing.

Riders love it.

Drivers love it.

The Rakyat love it.

Taxi companies don’t love it.

In the taxi industry, more consumer choice and better service isn’t a goal, it’s a threat. So, the taxi industry is asking the government to protect them from competition that would improve service for Malaysians and provide safer transportation for women.

Unfortunately, the government is listening to the taxi industry and ignoring the rakyat who are pleading for a safe and more reliable choice. This week, the Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat (SPAD) threatened to impound Uber's transportation partners’ vehicles even though they are fully compliant with the law.  SPAD’s actions contradict their acknowledgement that “…many users are satisfied and happy with services provided by Uber”.

Malaysians have made their opinion clear. In the media, on Facebook and Twitter consumers have been outspoken in their support for Uber. Prominent citizens, including Wan Saiful Wan Jan, CEO of Independent think tank Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) have spoken up as well, explicitly stating ‘Uber benefits consumers. Reform taxi services instead.’

Around the world, Uber is working with governments to achieve common goals focused on safe, reliable and efficient transportation options, that are regulated. We look forward to meeting with the government to discuss how we can work together to encourage innovation and create a safer environment for Malaysians — not protect incumbent industries from competition.

Malaysians deserve better.

Uber on, Malaysia!

Preparing for hackathons…

From a person named “Adrian” (all tools mentioned are suggestions, you can replace them with your preferred but similar tools, such as Laravel instead of Code Igniter)…

To prepare for a hackathon, I came out with a list of things to prepare before the actual day. The laptop needs to have all the software needed, such as image processing tool (eg. Adobe Photoshop), programming IDEs (eg. Notepad++ or Sublime), tools that allow a team of people to work on the same set of project codes (eg. Git), and tools needed to upload the files to an online server (eg. FTP or SSH). I have also prepared a framework that can be used for backend web services, for example PHP CodeIgnitor helps to speed up the process of setting up a web application. This is essential as you don’t need to start from scratch to create basic functions such as login, register, CRUD functions into the database. This can be prepared beforehand to save some time of coding and focus on the actual technologies that are required for the hackathon. Things that cannot be prepared beforehand would be the ideas, although you can prepare a set of ideas, these ideas may not be suitable for the theme of the hackathon.

On the actual day of the hackathon, it is important that you constantly drink fluids. The process of coding 24 hours can be stressful, thus you may forget to replenish the fluids that the body needs. Having enough food is important as well, but not to over eat as this might affect your mind to stay focus. Before you start the coding, it is important to plan the project properly. Discuss the key features, technologies required, and flow of the application before jumping into coding. You will have sufficient time to code the application provided you plan properly and pace yourself. It is important to focus on the key criteria of the competition as this will help you to stay focus on what is needed to be done and not waste time on doing things that are not required. Find out what each team member’s strength are and tap on them. For example, if one of the team members is good with Android programming, assign the Android programming task to him. Work on their strength to the team’s advantage; therefore, it is also crucial that the team formation is based on a variety of talents. However, having similar talents is also beneficial as this allow the team to work on the project much faster and produce better results.

Once the planning is done, delegate task to each member and make sure they are aware of what needs to be done. Someone will need to be the time keeper to keep track of the time and the progress of the project. This person will check the status and progress of each member on the task assigned. If one member is unable to cope, help to split the task with another team member to work on it. Identify which part of the application is a dependency. What this means is that certain function require another function to be completed before it can be worked on. This is important to note as this will delay the project if all the other functions depends on this function to work.

In the last few hours of the hackathon, wrap up the development of the codes and test. Testing should not be done only at the end but should be done whenever a new feature is worked on or during integration. Codes will break and you need to buffer some time for the bugs to be fixed. Make sure to finalize the application and stop coding so as not to introduce new bugs. The team should now focus on the presentation. Come out with a story to present the application. State the problem and address how the solution helps to solve the problem. Preempt some questions the judges might ask during the question & answer, this will help to keep the team calm if the question is being asked during the presentation.

In closing, a hackathon is a great place to meet new people and learn from them. Take the opportunity to talk to others and find out what they are doing. You never know that the person you’re working with could someday be someone you could turn to for help or start a business together. I had fun at my first hackathon and you should enjoy the experience as well.
